The Hypothesis web-based annotation client. Contribute to hypothesis/client development by creating an account on GitHub.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Annotate any page on
  2.  View
  3.

Expected behaviour

I would expect the titles of the various annotated posts displayed on H to be that of the <h1> tag on the annotated page or some other logical name based on a parsing algorithm.

Actual behaviour

The titles for almost all the annotations on my website (since 2016), regardless of the page they’re on, appear to be the incorrect title: “Top Ed-Tech Trends of 2015: Indie Ed-Tech”. The few exceptions seem to be the self-hosted .pdf files on my domain/storage that I’ve annotated.

Browser/system information

This appears to be browser and OS independent

Additional details

The only post on my website related to the title which appears seems to be which contains copies of the annotations I made on Audrey Waters’ page. See:

Some time around 2016 Audrey disabled annotations on her site (due to abuse, though it appears she’s since re-enabled them?). Is it possible that the H client has somehow cached the title of her post and is somehow mapping it as the title for all of the annotations made on my site? Having looked at the pages which have been annotated on my site, there’s nothing hiding in or related to the the meta data or rel=”canonical” links that would indicate that they should have the titles that H is finding for them.

I’m noticing that the sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset details in the Weather Widget are “off”. It currently displays the following:

Sunrise: 10:40 pm
Sunset: 10:47 am
Moonrise: 10:54 am
Moonset: 10:32 pm

Sunrise should be 7:13 AM (roughly for today) though 6:13 AM for tomorrow after Daylight Saving Time changes tonight. Moonrise today should be roughly 5:52 pm and moonset at 6:14 am.

Manually changing the lat/long in the Weather widget doesn’t seem to fix it. I also get the same numbers if there isn’t lat/long in the widget but have them in the user profile in the location section.

I’m using OpenWeatherMap as the provider, and I notice I’m getting two different readings for the sunrise/set & moonrise/set depending on whether I’m using the User Last Seen Widget or the Weather widget, so maybe the issue is hiding in the difference between calculations of one versus the other? The weather widget is the one giving the incorrect readings.

Filed an Issue Post Kinds Plugin for WordPress (GitHub)
adds support for responding to and interacting with other sites using the standards developed by the Indieweb Community - dshanske/indieweb-post-kinds

Recent Kinds Widget

It’s a reasonably frequent design/functionality pattern to see widgets from social media services. (Goodreads is an example that provides a widget for recent reads. Twitter does so for notes. There are countless others.)

In an IndieWeb world, it would be nice to highlight what one has recently read, watched, or listened to (as examples). Towards this functionality, it would be nice if Post Kinds could provide the ability to add widgets for a variety of the post kinds to sidebars or footers.

As a baseline I could envision each widget having:

  • a configurable title (“Recently read”, “Food diary” for eats & drinks, “Microblog” for recent notes, bookmarks, etc.)
  • a chooser for one (or more) of the many various (enabled) kinds
  • a variable N to allow for display of the N most recent of the chosen kinds; 5 or 10 might be a reasonable default; a time-based variable to run across the post within a recent period (days, weeks, months) might be a an interesting alternative as well

For display of a single kind, the widget might default to displaying:

  • a heading made of the post kind icon along with “Recent [Post Kind Name plural]”
  • Response Property Name (wrapped with the original permalink if it exists) by Author name (if it exists)
  • An optional published date for the original content (if it exists) or the date the site owner published the post kind (if it exists) (the original content date would be better for context, I think)
  • A fleuron () or hash (#) which could be wrapped with the permalink of the original Post Kind post.

UI example:

If the chooser in the widget allows for displaying multiple kinds at the same time, then one could have a widget for “Recent Media Consumed” or for displaying a sidebar microblog that could include Notes, bookmarks, reads, etc. (Making it similar to embedding one’s Twitter feed into a sidebar.

For encouraging outside consumption, the widget could also have a small RSS icon with a link to that Kind’s (or Kinds’) feed.

Naturally there could be some configuration for reasonable display defaults for some of the various Post Kinds./

Now archive page

Given some of the potential similarity of the widget work above, it would also be fun to have Post Kinds generate an archive page that shows by kind either the N most recent posts for each kind or all the posts within the last M days, O weeks, or P months.

This could be used to automatically generate the idea of a Now page that gives a quick overview of what a person has been up to over a relatively recent time period. A month of posts would be a good default.

One might also be able to use a solution like How to Add WordPress Widgets in Post and Page Content as a means of embedding the widgets into such a Now-type page, which could give the user the ability to pick and choose which order to place the particular kinds into based on the site owner’s discretion.

  1. On mobile version of Chrome using the via.hypothes.is prefix to activate Hypothesis on any website.
  2. I try to highlight a specific piece of text beyond a single word.

### Expected behaviour
I would expect to be able to slowly and accurately highlight a specific piece of text.

### Actual behaviour
Once I’ve got a small piece of text highlighted and try to expand it with the “handlebars” to go either up or down the page, generally beyond text on the same line, the cursor jumps immediately down to the very bottom of the page and it becomes essentially possible to select a particular block of text.

I’ve noticed that the built-in WordPress site search is generally abysmal because so much of the content of my site is handled by Post Kinds and the search doesn’t look through any of the common Post Kinds data fields.

As an example, trying to search for watches of particular television shows I know I’ve watched don’t show up because I leave those post title-less and don’t specifically tag them.

Is there something in the codex that will allow you to hook these fields into WP’s internal search?

Filed an Issue Introducing: Quotebacks by Tom Critchlow (tomcritchlow.com)
A chrome extension to quote the web

Tom, first off, this looks awesome!

My first question is: is there a list of CSS features for styling the way quotes look on one’s site? Your defaults are pretty solid, but I’m sure folks will want to tinker. Is there a way to contribute different styles to a list of a handful that the extension could make select-able on my site?

Second, I haven’t actually been able to use the functionality at all. It took a few minutes to find the pop up window that I ignored on install to figure out the ctrl-shift-s command. Once that was sorted, I’ve got another browser extension (The Great Suspender) that uses this same key sequence which then triggers that and not Quotebacks. Perhaps having the ability to custom configure the key sequence would be useful as would the ability to click on the browser extension icon as a means of triggering the quote save (a common pattern for extensions).

I’ll also note that even after disabling the other conflicting extension and refreshing, the ctrl-shift-s still doesn’t work, but I’m not sure what the conflict or issue may be. Having a few methods for triggering save would definitely be a benefit.

Finally, in addition to some of the other discussion I’ve seen which may nudge you to support fragmentions, Google just released highlight and scroll across the web from search this past week. Like fragmention, it provides an alternate method for a link to go to a webpage, scroll to and highlight the quoted portion(s). Perhaps a nice additional feature? (I suspect that fragmention may be easier and simpler to support.)

Create your own! This tool will produce much better results if the images are much larger than the intended size (e.g. 1400 x 800 at least) since it needs to downsize the original to fit the different dimensions.

Alan, I took a swing at trying out the live Comparator SPLOT today. It’s very cool looking! Sadly I kept getting an error in the WP upload interface simply saying “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.”

I was uploading a simple .jpg of about the same size and dimensions as those recommended and already in the repository. I tried a few different photo sizes and types with the same result, so I’m not sure what the underlying issue may be. Unless something has changed dramatically, my one guess would be to check the storage limits on the hosting account. I’ve seen that sort of failure before when running out of physical space on a host.

Incidentally, from a security standpoint, I’ll mention that it appears one has the ability within that interface to delete others’ previously uploaded photos. (May want to look at that as a potential future improvement.)

Hope you’re holding up!

All of the crashes have occurred as I’m adding one or more tags to an annotation/highlight. I haven’t experienced a crash while creating annotation text.

The crash is immediate and complete and doesn’t just take out the individual tab, but the entirety of the Chrome processes. While it’s possible that this could be a Chrome issue, I’ve not experienced any crashes with any other websites in ages. I also know that there has been some new code and UI work around the interface and the way that tags are displayed in the public H product.

My initial guess is that something may be happening within the memory/caching as H tries to pull past tags from the server to guess what I’m typing.

I’ve alternated with using Firefox and the bookmarklet and have yet to see an issue with crashes there.

I’ve found a few instances in which Brid.gy will apparently fail to send a webmention (and/or fail to find a target) when the original URL contains an emoji(s). I’d suspect it’s a quirky encoding issue of some sort. I’m sure I’ve seen this issue before on Instagram where it’s probably more likely as the result of emojis in Instagram “titles” when using PESOS methods.

When I subsequently remove the emoji from the permalink, and reprocess Bridgy then has no problem finding the URL and sending the webmention. So at least there’s a “fix” on the user’s side for those experiencing this issue, but only if they’re aware it exists and have the means of executing it.

Example of failed webmention:

(I’ll note that it’s also got a fragment # in the URL, but don’t think this is a part of the issue)

A visual representation of the button/tabbed functionality for "All Time Views" described in the text.

I’ve been enjoying the idea that JetPack is providing a Github contributions-like functionality at under the heading Posting Activity.

Seeing this naturally provides me some additional motivation to post more often, which is generally a good thing for the platform. It also dovetails in visually with the “you have posted X days in a row” notifications sent by the mobile app.

I’m sure it all may be on the roadmap somewhere, but in case it’s not I thought I’d leave a few ideas about continuing to extend this awesome functionality and related UI features.

  • It would be nice to be able to display more than one calendar year of activity. Perhaps a tabbed UI could provide access to prior years while still being relatively compact? (This could be similar to “All Time Views” just below it which has button (aka tab) options for “Months and Years” or “Average per Day”.
  • While hovering over a particular square representing a date provides some useful information like the number of posts on a particular date, it would be awesome if clicking on that date would take one to the correct archive page for that date. This is not too dissimilar to from GitHub’s functionality and the permalinks for each day should already exist in core. Example: to show all of that day’s posts.
  • Similar to the functionality for posts, it would be interesting to have a similar set up for comments to allow sorting through those visually as well.
  • It would be awesome to have all of the above rolled up into a widget that would allow one to post the visual data for several months and/or years visually on a sidebar, footer, or other widgetizeable area. This also provides site readers the ability to quickly jump to a particular date and/or set of posts much like the Archives widget allows, but with a more visual interface.
  • If there is a widget, while I’m sure that many will love the blue WordPress-based color scheme, many will want to key their colors off of their theme as a customizable widget option.
  • Given the infrastructure for creating a lot of the above functionality, one could go a half step further and create an “On this Day” feature similar to that of Facebook, Timehop, and many others which allow one to create archive page views for what happened on this same day a year ago, two years ago, three, four, etc. This could be wonderfully useful for a wide variety of sites to look back at birthdays, anniversaries, and red letter dates as well as the average Tuesday. To my knowledge there is only one old plugin that I was able to find after some serious search that has somewhat similar functionality: Room 34 presents On This Day. There is also some similar functionality like this recently built into the Post Kinds Plugin which creates archive views for several date-based permalinks. This would be all the better if there is a better API for such an endpoint so that it could be tied into third party platforms like Timehop which are overly focused on social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc., but which could include WordPress-based websites.

Also as I post this, and as I’m thinking the functionality is relatively new, I notice that my JetPack enabled .org site only has Posting Activity that goes back to mid-October 2018 (despite the fact that it should go back much further), while my wordpress.com site has data that goes far back beyond that date. Is this a potential bug, or could it be the case that my self-hosted site hasn’t been parsed back far enough to cover more time yet? It may also be related to the fact that I’ve recently (this week) disconnected and reconnected JetPack to do some troubleshooting.

On a multi-column display the year column doesn't scroll in alignment with the remainder of the chart

Perhaps this is a native WP.com issue, but I suspect it’s JetPack functionality as it occurs both with a .org connected account as well as an example.wordpress.com domain both of which have a “Powered by JetPack” logo on the bottom of the page.

Steps to reproduce the issue

  1. Go to
  2. Scroll down the page (zoom in if necessary so that the table fills the entire screen; the error isn’t as or won’t be obvious on a new account or if one doesn’t have several years worth of data to view)

What I expected

I expected the entire chart and page to scroll down.

What happened instead

The Year column stayed fixed and the remainder of the chart scrolls down the page instead. Without zooming in/out on the entire page, one can’t visualize the data or have it align properly.

Here’s a shot of the misaligned static year column versus the remainder of the chart which scrolls up/down.

Some who come across the plugin who are relatively IndieWeb-aware don’t know how to use the plugin:

What exactly are the triggers for syndicating to IndieWeb News and Indieweb.xyz? Is it just having a tag indienews, indieweb, or even indie* where * is a wildcard? Are there others I may be missing?

Can one target other subs within indieweb.xyz (examples: /en/longreads or /en/games/) or just the /language/indieweb/ sub with the plugin? How is differentiating them done from the user’s perspective? I do see a reference to the /hottubs/ sub in the code, but I’m not following all the logic there.

I suspect it would also be nice to have some details about the dashboard widget and news feeds as well as listing a requirement for the Webmention plugin which some might not know about.

I’m happy to modify the readme’s with better instructions if I can be a bit more clear on some of what the code is doing with regard to the above.

With the most recent update I’m noticing a few small edge case quirks that seem to have popped up:

For syndication to indieweb.xyz the displayed result (set for icon only) is giving a relatively interesting “info” icon, which is a reasonable proxy, but sadly the hover text is also “info” instead of a more useful or expected “indieweb.xyz”.

For syndications to reading.am (which I’m guessing still doesn’t have a service specific icon) instead of giving the old default image of a globe icon, it’s not displaying anything at all. I haven’t tested specifically, but are unmapped urls still given that old default icon?

I’m still seeing issues with my chrisaldrich.wordpress.com URL. Previously it displayed a blank space (presumably not able to understand the inpub), but the newer version is displaying the word “WordPress” even when I’m using icons only. (Example: My initial inclination is that the two instances of “WordPress” at are both CamelCase when all the other examples around/near that segment of code are all lower case.

Given the tremendous number of self-refbacks, it would be nice to have a setting that would allow the plugin to silently discard refbacks to one’s own website. Since adding the plugin I’d estimate that 99.9% of the refbacks I get are from people clicking links on my own website rather than external links others.

This should be separate from preventing self-webmentions as I (and I suspect others may) want to have those show up to cross link or cross reference posts on their own sites.

Currently OwnYourSwarm will allow crossposts with GPS data that allows Simple Location to display. Though OYS doesn’t send the weather data, I presume it could be possible that upon receipt of the OYS data that Simple Location could still be triggered to do a weather lookup so that the checkin could display both the location as well as the weather data for that checkin.

Taking things a half step further, perhaps any micropub or other incoming post creation tool that includes location data could automatically trigger a weather lookup? Then OwnYourGram, DsgnWrks Instagram Importer, or other similar tools that create new posts with location data could provide weather as well.

In the settings on my site, I’ve even got the “Default Kind for New Posts” set to checkin, as I use it often, yet the posts still show up as a note.

Apparently the v3.7.7 update seems to break the display of avatar images in facepiles for likes, bookmarks, etc. Instead of showing the expected avatar image, it’s showing the author’s name wrapped with an href for the originating site.

It’s not just my site either as I notice that the facepiles at (using Sempress) are also displaying the same way.

I’d simultaneously updated the Webmention plugin and tried uninstalling and reinstalling both plugins as well as checking a variety of settings (including the discussion setting for showing Avatars) and uninstalling a variety of potential conflicting plugins, but to no avail.

I know there were recent changes for privacy related pieces, perhaps this is the cause?

It looks like the new “read” functionality for mentions automatically facepiles them anyway, but I’ve noticed that the settings at /wp-admin/options-discussion.php#semantic_linkbacks doesn’t include a checkbox for reads.

This really isn’t an issue (at least for me), but you may want to be aware of it or tweak it for parity’s sake.

It would be nice if there were a way to distinguish between various watch types to differentiate between films, television, and internet based streaming media — perhaps with a data field and a toggle along with three appropriate icons for each of these rather than the single watch icon now (a generic “play” button).

Further, most of the current meta data fields are fairly solid for the most often used fields, but I often find that it would be nice to have fields for Season # and Episode # for television shows.

The last “big” piece that would be nice to have is a quickly usable ratings field of sorts so one could provide a rating 1-5, 1-10, or 1-100 rating field? Maybe it could be a simple numerical data field that calculates/displays a rough 5 star-based scale? h-review markup could also come into play here as well, though it would be nice to capture the raw data even if there is no UI display built for it.

For ease-of-use as well as to help designers, theme builders, and maybe even Gen2 it might be useful to have a “master template” for views which includes all of the output of the data fields within Post Kinds in a single view.

If done in a relatively modular fashion with good commenting, perhaps even Gen2 folks could more easily delete or move pieces within such a master template to mash up various pieces to get what they’d like to display. Including alternate versions for displaying things could be useful as well (eg: raw display of things like start time and end time as well as a separate calculated duration time based on these two.)
